We are big fans of the breakfast buffets in most European hotels. I was greeted in the morning by a barista asking cappucino? This was music to my ears.
We made it to the Trevi Fountain which was amazing, the Pantheon, the Time Elevator where we saw a 5D movie on the history of Rome, (very cool) the Coluseum and the Forum. We also walked to the Boghese Park and several fountains. Kent walked to the Vatican too.
We found clothes, etc at a mountain shop for Kent and me. I got some hiking capris and sandals. Kent found some shorts and a belt. At a department store KJ found summer things including pj's, a jumbo pack of undies, a skirt and a couple t-shirts. We did pick up a few other things at the Adidas Store close to our hotel. We decided to buy things that we'd wear again rather than just some cheapo stuff. Naturally our bags were delivered to the hotel on our third night. One of the hotel employees told us we had to be patient and that things are slow in Italy. I guess he was right. It was great having our things but boy, did I over pack! That is worthy of a blog entry of its own.
We really loved Rome but it is a place I'd like to visit again as we didn't get to everything.... but who does? July is hot and the city is packed with tourists. Seeing Rome with a nine year old warrants frequent gelato stops (not that I'm complaining)Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-25494811873167202322008-09-08T19:11:00.000-07:002008-12-11T11:19:14.204-08:00Off To Roma...Today is the start of our 3 week Italian adventure. Before I begin I must admit how fortunate Kent, KJ and I are to have this opportunity.
Off we went off to the National Theatre stop to catch the Flytoget (fast train) to the Guardemoen Airport. The flight was uneventful however our bags didn't make it. We weren't the only ones. By the looks of it, I'd say about 20 passengers were bagless. Big bummer as I assessed our wardrobes. We were going to be hot in Rome. Kent spent forever in line waiting to speak with the Air Italia agent. He finally left without a clue as to the whereabouts of our luggage. Fortunately, our driver was still waiting to take us to Hotel Forte. This was a worthwhile splurge after the luggage ordeal.
The hotel is located super close to the Spanish Steps which was appealing to me. I've been there before and loved hanging out and people watching. Emanuel, the consierge was welcoming and gave us a choice between two double rooms. We picked the one with two levels. KJ was all about having her own space. He also told us not to worry about our missing bags. Easy for him to say I thought.
We headed out to explore, perhaps buy some cooler clothes and eat. I'm trying not to freak out about the bags but it is super hot and I'm not used to the heat. Kent found an Adidas "climacool" shirt. It becomes part of his uniform for the next three weeks. We find a small cafe with some of the best pizza that has ever crossed our lips and the Italian beer is so refreshing. I forget how grumpy and hot I am. Geez, after all I am in ROME! We look around a bit more after dinner. We buy toothpaste, toothbrushes, a comb and brush.
Much later we head out for gelato and enjoy it walking around the Spanish Steps. What a beautiful evening! We decide to treat ourselves to gelato everyday while we are in Italy. What a goal?!?Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-5250244028673458372008-09-08T19:04:00.000-07:002008-12-11T11:18:48.473-08:00American Independence in Norway?Sunday June 29 was a celebration in Frogner Park. Each year a picnic is held in honor of America's Independence and we were able to partake. What a party! There was variety of food for the hungry: tacos, barbeque, fried chicken, chocolate chip cookies and brownies, and of course the usual Norwegian fare... hot dogs and waffles.

The kids enjoyed races and games and a watermelon eating contest.

The American Women's group had a book sale where we bought paper backs for 5 kroner. What a deal!

It was a lot of fun. A great way to spend our last day in Oslo!Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-39389424001943300392008-08-28T17:26:00.000-07:002008-09-08T19:04:16.902-07:00Time For ClosureMy blog has been neglected. Well, its been no problem. Kayleigh had Anna and Elsa over for a sleepover one night. We also went to see a production of the Jungle Book at Frogner Park with Meagan and her kids. The play was in Norwegian (of course) and was not Disney like at all. We'll chalk it up as a cultural experience. We did get free bananas.
We had a barbecue with our new friends last night at Frogner Park. One of the things I've wanted to do. We had our one time use disposable grills which we really enjoy using. The weather wasn't very good but it didn't stop kids from rolling down the wet, grassy hill. Go KJ! We introduced The Aussies to smores and they really liked them. Chloe said she wants to have a smore party for her friends when she get home; very cute.
We only have 3 more days in Oslo before we leave for Italy. It's hard to believe!Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-43575797814801321542008-06-25T02:18:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:45.075-08:00Oslo Fun!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9ww732Gtel-6I_ALpKb_qjGJovucaAiMAmCRJnisBCoqCtG-zj3HyBpR7MgmgW-hd5p4NxJUXbYa_MZaxzl575G2NNmjN0HWO_h3ZO5bvZ5zrVMGDx7b4OD403va2TbqLRTuphZeSWKCs/s320/IMG_1141.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216433532941779922" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi32GszFtEbzpIqTnOmz4BgRu7LQEVjveDtKzgTFRtX0zS8BP7tk54ybYaeS-jgR0AJjRUDxV9zjQnBgtwewVe0LD7poONT6VX9b4B3qp8vrVNnu2FVaZi3bVyD23vBSsjuPvx0gI1pNBzk/s320/IMG_1142.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216433279956075218" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZAVT-Rh9mhbsu6X4jQ4SgKGJ9QnlmX4MHXC9u1UajpY8Hp2rVnyIkyB04UtIJ9yICeNhvr2YNHlwtZyBLyEr2lRbto5DcKLtQNniIDIpJFwD1GjzhagtAxCmQ6m8nbjQ-A3AYBYlFW5VQ/s320/IMG_1146.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216432943223337090" />
Monday Kayleigh and I met our new Aussie friends at the bus stop and headed to the Norske Folk Museum for a Mid Summer's Festival. It was pretty entertaining with lots of activities. The kids hit the arts and crafts table and made crowns. After, they spent a long time at the play scape. We watched and sampled a lefsa demonstration. (It was some of the best lefsa I've ever eaten.) They went on a carriage ride. The museum also had different musicians performing too. Many people were barbecuing.
Mid Summer's Eve is a fun time in Scandinavia. I don't know much about it but it is common for people to people to celebrate late into the night on their boats out on the Oslo Fjord. There are also lots of bonfires and picnics. Unfortunately, I missed out on all the excitement. The game was played at the Roa field which is far from home. KJ and Kent got a ride and there wasn't any room for me.
When they returned after the game Kent said something about a hat trick and Kayleigh in the same sentence. I had to think for a minute.... Wow! KJ had a hat trick... that's 3 goals in one game! The team came back and won! I think Kent was as excited as Kayleigh and I did get a great replay of the game.
Playing soccer for KJ this spring was so great. The girls and their parents were all so friendly not to mention it was really good for her game too. Norway has some outstanding young soccer players.Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-38898171406456256732008-06-21T08:33:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:46.205-08:00Schools Out for Summer!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTfD4sxY6Dbmm1R6DbAbsqNWRmSj68M0NudPgMpWoU2zjzN9rQj52dZ12-XY980raqKk5kPEPu09YwaT9qTYBJyRpcxmuqu7Ujchgtgl0deSxKFJ8tehEahhut6PT2okuWKgzWUJU3GI0N/s320/IMG_1080.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5214365038151891922" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_Fz1z1QEFz_5H4ROWXGpnEYGN_aUmJ_EC6p3788mj0WasE1myRjxCPc-Bb5MAB3zQWzqjshywiTgpSrlEGCv_Y98zGYvuwJ9loL_DfjSsoqn13hHmBpEOUqf4SWarPjhD-lXHHgWH4LZZ/s320/IMG_1082.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5214364791967991570" />

June 20 was KJ's last day at Uranienborg Skole. Her classmates all from various countries will be will be going to different schools except for 2 kids who started at the end of the year. They are ready to transition into regular Norwegian classes. They attended Uranienborg because of the special Norwegian class and will return to their neighborhood schools.
They had a party and said there good-byes yesterday. When Kayleigh came home she said she felt kinda sad since she'll never see her teachers or her classmates again. I'm glad she felt this way, not that I want her to be sad. I know she had a good experience and will have nice memories of going to school in Oslo.
Early on I remember her commenting that everyone should speak English and English is the best language. A few months ago she began speaking more Norwegian and she said she wants to continue to learn more. Where do we find a Norwegian class in Portland?
We are feeling bittersweet that our time in Norway is coming to an end. If we stayed longer KJ would be in a regular fourth grade class and be fluent. It would be great to see that but we are looking forward to seeing Mackay, friends and family, our house and Portland!!!
Oslo is a wonderful place but it's not home.....Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-71198602919727510952008-06-19T12:54:00.000-07:002008-06-19T13:15:30.373-07:00What a Game!!!At soccer practice Tuesday Isabelle, the team leader asked if Kayleigh wanted to play in both games this week; Thursday and Friday. I guess families are busy since it this is the last week of school and some of her team mates can't play.
Personally, I'm kind of a burned out soccer mom but when we asked KJ she jumped at the chance to play Thursday and Friday.
Well, after tonight's game a recap is definitely in order. The forecast called for a rainy and windy day and that it was. Foolishly, I thought perhaps the game would be called off due to bad weather. I knew better so off we went to meet the team and carpool to our opponents field. KJ commented that she loves playing in the rain and I guess she does. Frigg Farta had an outstanding game! All the girls played brilliantly making nice passes and playing stellar defense. The score was 5-0. Yes, Frigg had 5. Kayleigh wound up with 2 goals and was very excited.
On a side note. One of the girls... Villja, who is really good forgot her cleats. She wanted to play in her Wellies which is not allowed. She and her pappa disappeared and turned up right at game time. Villja was wearing Isabelle's running shoes which were huge and they were stuffed with socks to keep them on her feet. It slowed her down a bit but she still had a good game. What determination!
I wonder if tomorrow's game will be nearly as interesting or as entertaining?Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-61769048561842677922008-06-19T12:36:00.000-07:002008-06-19T12:54:15.485-07:00New FriendsOne of our regular stops is to our neighborhood library. They have one shelf of children's books in English which includes picture books up to young adult novels. It isn't much but Kayleigh has read all the Harry Potter books and several books by Roald Dahl.
Yesterday we stopped by to return Harry Potter. As we were browsing through the books we heard English. Sure enough, it was a fellow mom with her three kids. Before we knew it we had new friends. Meagan is from Australia and her kids are Chloe 8, April 6, and Conner 3. They have been in Oslo since January and are leaving in July. The same time frame as my family. Meagan's husband is working here and they live next to Kayleigh's school. The kids are home schooled as Meagan is a teacher so that is probably why we never met.
We really hit it off and ended up chatting for a long time in front of the English book shelf. Eventually one of the librarians told us that we'd have to leave so others could have a chance to look at the books. Funny, I think we're the only ones who check them out.
We checked out our books, said our good byes and exchanged phone numbers and decided it would be fun to hitch up next week with the kids.
Our little trip to the library ended up being a pleasant surprise.Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-2354266640138403002008-06-19T06:04:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:46.685-08:00Father's Day 2008<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT49Br6LqWY__93o9OI7Py5kEV0SUn273mDiXUN0p9h7oaWZlutwcpRUqtSYW4kBdkRdr6jSWidlcKMfivSHnGfNJDoFzcsaS0z3bqACmWzXsdTj-R58YQjqRyTDudCCqrDWkNcIVpquIt/s400/IMG_0984.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213583899669023618" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmU2TJG6Z39IDIcteANio58OohCesjrLVoyiwYik-w0zxZ-FpUN2YNFOgDxKPv2R4vIqVldMndWrYSSat7BPVsrQ-YadVBr5_LA8ekBWgqDlOc00Je-ZaJJu0scCb1bQcsoq2SFBSDpNyV/s400/IMG_1073.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213581562289494834" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIFfIPvZqLGsGUEkCVu4kBzR1Nh8zNTj8-1sovqcXZXJTw_wqFNs9QQEbkS4quJBDvRFkHDTo19WcSzGnxWnr_M6jDktdIXVeuEiKbpTiFm750ybS4wBzHG33aPvqyFwW72H2LfkKm6eER/s400/IMG_1075.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213581317445128018" />
Happy Belated Father's Day to all you dad's out there. I know my dad was taken care of very well by my sister and her family in Austin. He loves Texas and is getting a healthy fix of his favorite food group... red meat.
We video chatted with the Ausinites and Bismarcker to wish dad a Happy Father's Day. Sorry Andy if I forgot to send a happy day your way....
My husband had a lazy day. KJ made him a super cool poem including some great art work. She also gave him a baseball hat. (Norway style) I made him a card and bought him a couple of "real beers" which are hard to find here.
He decided to skip church, there's a surprise and have some quality alone time. He did take KJ to the church picnic which was indoors since it was raining. It was a swell time. They even had smores!
Tootie and I were busy cooking the crisp, guacamole and southwest stir fry. It was a fun and lazy day.Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-81678677865562169662008-06-19T03:08:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:47.356-08:00Tootie Does Oslo!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbeWckGjujNCQknEG5WGKVAvQzdeiXpUMvHZs8es3H1jUGE0byMZk9tDHxhdkzeSyFHpHI6rcYT2Zy0aKN6qf6JLHLt2tcm5T4ZGYWvty0e2qyQDo0KPD2yDrm3BdRsajh8Cn8Mbro6SLt/s400/IMG_1035.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213577340830184658" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMEd_3UYVJ_i7fjG9fDfNhPjk8UFXNtqiZ5HyME130QclrFpT2PS9of3fcyaWgRLSMvFPcJwuX6Qo8UsQMR3E8-G_6H098B81EGOeMuYpt6Af1IzP7MhNPvBFUDR3NIHJvxNmf6ZQOd_nH/s320/IMG_1038.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213576895790941890" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE-spx_dXuxQ313NLxi28XBRTLtAzhEDbby6TCi2Jm5otj41MX90yc2yoI_7wcDSjMIxfNDg-b3Os5ZMRCN0-yYodFlYi1ybf2iQ4s4N4dC-CyXDiMI2c5eC8L69ibHnNtJngSiv0yoLJY/s320/IMG_1047.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213576578180727522" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgga9l6wlpILPC82TpX62Peu7HYDtYNcWJ8yYQpIQBCtwvfMy026WjX9wjr98BNncRp-mQdvfGAibcYhvowYj6FPCGHx2aMZWKUvptZlQbB9Le2X-znjNU-UCMeF5Bt0va_wximSM3bYlKY/s320/IMG_1061.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213576243170498946" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikm3X7Z-hiRM5-PIZrQzbYVCOwHAq5RThO57usiJIMJ1U9i5aHR1En4uW2tWJ_TlxY8uKeUdt2ss83IvBbBz6Wl18KHUo5jNg5Yggi9_rH8chFEMUv7vSWqHecD29jzjtvFjMy9LpJIJKq/s400/IMG_1078.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213575689327364754" />
Oslo is a wonderful European city to visit. There are truly many sights to see that it is hard to decide. I had a fun time showing Mom around. Here are the spots she visited.

* Vigeland Park and the museum: my favorite. I think she liked it a lot too.

* Literature House: I had never been. This was started by Norli which is the largest
bookstore in Norway. They have authors come and speak and have different programs
going on. There are several stages and conference rooms. There is also a bookstore
and a cafe. We thought it was a great idea but not much to see.

* Strolling around the palace and Karl Johan's Gate which is always fun; great people
watching.

* Oslo Fjord Cruise: KJ, Mom and I went one afternoon; it was beautiful and in-
teresting. We had a guide who had a lot of information to share. We also had a
glass of wine and hot cocoa for KJ.

* The Viking Ship Museum: We took the ferry over to the Bygdoy Peninsula where the
museum is located. Everyone loves seeing those old Viking ships.

* Telenor and lunch with Kent: Dining at Telenor is always tasty but where is the
dessert? Those Telenor employees must be healthy?

* The National Gallery and The Nobel Peace Center: This was a Kent/Tootie outing.
They both enjoyed the sights not to mention spending quality time together.

* Sex and the City at the Gimle Theatre: What a cool theatre! It was a great evening.
We had cosmopolitans; very appropriate and yummy. After the entertaining flick I
took Mom to San Leandro's a tapas bar Kent and I had been to. I love tapas. We
dined on olives, tortilla de patata, calamari, shrimp, manchengo queso and ham from
Spain and of course vino.... Lots of fun. Did I already say that?

* Church at the American Lutheran: Mom is very excited that we've started going to
church. There was blue grass music by Apple Blossom and KJ received a certificate
for attending Sunday School.

* Holmenkollen and the souvenir ski shop: Mom bought herself a Norwegian ski sweater.
I'm jealous and still drooling over the one I want. (The ski jump is the #1 tourist
spot in Oslo.)

Wow! We really did do a lot. I'm impressed but the best part of her visit was getting to spend time together. She got her share of the Gilmore Girls and Kent and I introduced her to Heroes. I think she liked it. We really don't watch that much TV. We also did quite a bit of home cooking. Mom made Kent a rhubarb crisp for Father's Day and cooked him dinner.
I think Tootie did Oslo quite well!Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-26745916726096913362008-06-18T03:08:00.000-07:002008-06-18T03:19:53.523-07:00Coffee Please....I have found my favorite coffee spots in Oslo obviously so it was great to have a coffee partner in my mom while she was here. She was quite happy drinking lattes and americanos and sampling the baked goods with us. The places we hit included: Baker Hansen, (twice) United Bakery, Apent, and Kaffebrenneriet (twice). We decided Kaffebenneriet has the best americanos with warm frothy milk on the top. Baker Hansen has the best scones. Okay, I've mentioned that a few times. I think in my prior life I was a baker....
I'm definitely experiencing coffee/sugar withdrawal since Mom left yesterday!!!Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-41694558336718154072008-06-18T02:34:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:47.635-08:00Travel Fun<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMBiKiGJ8Pr83GENND6TJzS5uxYzGK5LCn0TrlkD_lkxGZMdQY4yox8-d1qKsXrHFC5rJIL5fffE28L_B_PHt0pO1A7MGeuhUDJbNhDQ7r-1LCLEdQuO1vryKmATZEAXZXpLP8DuFKEWO0/s320/IMG_1032.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213161130167981010" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKLFB5xjZSfS2iiAWfk6-VyzmK-2T6uF950XYMCGG3yTIzd5oIB9gioRlkEQJV_JisMasqUzfsRLEkI5UabfQ9ceZFDf7dJT6AHIVxL7r92OsJOCwDeulGI-cV5B1uN-wpMdPhiYhqzE_A/s320/IMG_1063.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213160186298734322" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzaBwWcDY3OLLajzLRadBaxnnboF3jo0cAmL_cMiEhBZB75veprUNbZNQelmNBVueCoQk-T0Z1zF0BTbk0-121Foec-WGDQJYyPak16Kv-Q6bOHrlJyKklpsVgb-fPr4vH6HhpUKj2MloE/s320/IMG_1029.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213158974314286514" />
My mom had her reservations about making the long journey to Oslo to visit us. Her main concern was flying over by herself as my dad doesn't have much interest in travel unless it involves seeing his beloved children and grandkids. After a little convincing from me and several of her well traveled friends she decided to go for it! I'm happy to report her visit was very fun.... however before she even got off the ground in Bismarck there was a situation!!!
I received a phone call from my sister about 11 pm the night before Mom was coming. Apparently the plane out of Bismarck had mechanical problems so by the time it left she missed her connection in Minneapolis. As it turned out she was booked on later flights in both MPLS and Amsterdam and all was well. KJ and I were at the airport when she arrived. Flying internationally is difficult for most so I was impressed at the amount of energy Mom had. She was pretty perky her whole visit.Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-33979624069978431422008-06-08T11:26:00.001-07:002008-12-08T15:59:48.816-08:00Norwegian Heat Wave<img style="float:left; Let me tell you its been beautiful! We wake up with lots of sun and it is mild. I've been wearing shorts and t-shirts on our walk to school in the morning. I keep thinking this must not be normal? On Friday and Saturday it was 30 degrees celsius. (which is about 88 degrees F) I guess a front is heading our way with rain which will cool things off... Go figure my mom arrives tomorrow. Oh well, what are you going to so about it? We'll have lots of fun regardless of the weather. BTW, I'm a bit if a weather nut.
Here's a recap of our week of summer.....
Monday, KJ and I headed to H and M to buy some shorts and t-shirts. I only brought 2 pairs of shorts and KJ is growing! (H and M is one of the stores we can afford in Norway.)
Wednesday..... Kayleigh and her friends Anna and Elsa and I went to Frogner Park and they played in the fountains. We also checked out the pool and made a plan to go swimming on Friday.
Wednesday evening Kent and I walked back to the park so he could check out the pick-up ultimate practice we found out about on-line. It was successful! The players were all super friendly. Kent wasn't dressed to play and was even wearing sandals but that didn't stop him. I left because KJ was at home. When he returned he told us he had been invited to a tourney on Saturday.
Thursday..... Kayleigh played in a really hot soccer game and it wasn't a pretty one for Frigg Farta. So much for an undefeated season.
Friday..... We hit Frognerbadet. It was a super time. There are 3 pools and a huge water slide. The girls went down the slide numerous times. One of the pools is more for playing and splashing. There is also a baby pool across from it. On the upper level is the deep pool which includes lap lanes and on the other end are some very high places for diving.
Fognerbadet also includes a lot of green space if you want to hang out and have a picnic. I can't wait to go back!
Saturday.... Kent decided to play in the EZ Oslo Ultimate Tourney. KJ and I went to cheer him on. He had a terrific time. He was on the pick up team and they needed him. They actually almost won the whole tourney but ended up in second place. He met a lot of friendly people from all over and was happy to be playing Ultimate again. Rumor has it.... we might find Kent out throwing the disc back in Portland.
Sunday.... We went to church since there aren't many more Sundays we'll be in Oslo. After church we went to Sognsvann to hike a little. What a beautiful place! We ended up stopping at Oslo's new opera house on the way home. (It really wasn't on the way home.) All I can say is WOW!Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-7156944774281255342008-06-03T13:09:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:49.683-08:00We Love Oslo<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpDDmH0vXP08ExVXMQtfxf5KR1V8-UELrJI4CH1JG8cx8rEbbhJ6TJkGfu5ar8K-YrOjF8YGbzJFIgRdcXJ9Ha8VLogDkd-Yk4GeuO5tvQSpQxntS52YgRPEPs6cwySC-DI0LbpcZ681w8/s320/IMG_0920.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207758416582440818" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4CK3ZRppZTPRaYzbypUA8xkA0IhyZfWSol79Y1fQlDv8PP7Ez2ROSb-nWAwXdleSnGGMEnL6Ttcot6UfK8nqCdQXGIONBisifAchGMBM9szIYalX5_uiMxy3gW8grjydws5LElI9z8N5e/s320/IMG_0926.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207758060100155234" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Vpb8EFr67TXeicLFJlDViLi5aJMR9Sq3vn8t8F7iYWxNtmK6tUJAZ0uthQcWAcU7qBxpfL8Pj8wUNAv5FgRqBp8-HDK41DWXYTvYKs0lD8RUzwB3-VJAgbKNWdErq_aJabVH8Q-QeoRi/s400/IMG_0929.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207757669258131282" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihLETd338oJ3ZnGnUmtShn10-PY6ZGMP1GsJ30tGuWULfazQZpJWdtGVgQ1lx4vKnxOUINreZfHcx7JFeDl7vJkHDTxL_djugEK7yaz9pZTQpRL-gk8a9J1kwnOBQcpuF6zrflsUsf9uxV/s320/IMG_0931.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207756939113690946" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMFS7jwZt_LOmwsj7alxxi6rKkMNna-yHcDdG-0TJx57O-Gou0GLzKIQxfchlBrvEL0r5sw8jupmkZCtstX_1v6TJ_Q1Ho5dU3upswmUNmO7WCvlPphN0jIKoBp6gv6bNApCwBS6m4pfFq/s400/IMG_0933.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207756410832713522" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnXQO2T5E8XT3fVMoaECwCCvXjibR2ZZasdnBhGPy0ZWdvVcPE84BaMk-Gl_PmdkZj5jBb0Qt-zxNNCuGmMikQ8RQuaAX_2iMOLlg2B3LNx92uJ9qpiEvR9hyUTZabjJ1WWH7JBs9tKxsO/s400/IMG_0937.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207754259054098210" />
It will be hard to leave Oslo; it has become a special place to us. Here are a few of the places/things we'll miss... Kent and I decided the best word to describe the city is stimulating. There is so much going on... it is great and overwhelming all at the same time. Maybe I'm getting old because I don't remember feeling this way the last time I was here as a 20 year old.
Sunday we checked out of our hotel after breakfast. Tonight we're camping out with Teresa. Dan is heading to Munich for work. KJ, Kent and I went to the Nemo Science Museum which was a blast. I got my soy latte at a local coffee shop on the way. D and T hit a couple museums on their own. Together we visited a church/house museum and then went out for a beer before Dan had to head to the airport. We also swung by a houseboat museum. After a tasty dinner at a cozy spot Teresa found, Kent and I strolled through the red light district where there is lots of stimulation... Teresa offered to hang with Kayleigh.
FYI.... KJ says Teresa is the best sleeper in the world. She can sleep through the 3 of us up in the middle of the night dealing with KJ's rash.
In the morning we went to have Dutch pancakes before we headed back to Oslo. the pancakes were quite the hit.Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-49598625735166631132008-06-03T03:24:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:51.521-08:00Sun, Bikes, Boats, Food and Friends<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxx3aCczmU7St25GO-khGvs1pwRxoiiMoMk0JN5-r3jVehPVsf6FHiXbHaPdOvj2P4DAVJOKNyjsxTpdQS9FrlyKhwXTn5ybZ7OwBjmG9f1vi1z1DBJSKUEAzokBU8U0_lcilFf1ckiXge/s320/IMG_0869.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207738853006407362" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaXtlHdLVvJRQhVn1SFCd5y2yXUvOdtFPbHTYLgY8OgvUQHR26gky8kGDragq_9LoIKJhj_O41LkvhNnzBxL-ey5LQCtLm_nTcTB2W1Ez2dIpsLg9i89QyTdGDZVaybH6aj1uVHEG7sIzO/s320/IMG_0871.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207738539473794738" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY5I9khVdvAZGPSw_QKV2IYzuDpMF8iiVeNqf1pIr2kIsmZZprJ6RMTkNrMBMkRd3IIW9s9gIz8IpwYoqwWMlV2GvC7BvR8YJ0sNNKldqaJSxBxUqpZVhyphenhyphenEDUCv-7wjSvLfvMGgt_dCspD/s320/IMG_0872.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207738088502228642" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje0AznxWuOZf7Sg2KDsqjHsxJ_EpLGEIZoXcMGGN9cBZe1L8iEV4fRkVFtVNXN1mIuohE7BO-0dpHZKfUxayWV_tUCIIvbGRElUA40e3BBWR6-AbMTB5qF9SbG0frcGJq0jq4VhYD3hFPh/s400/IMG_0877.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207737740609877650" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvE4Dpe9Zmd2QlY5L26KypicfHkfttFh9ZfZ6CtttckD-_MYZi13vX0pJOFIT-5hmZUYpVH5iSyM7GMZAglZgFAe5XgudUUcua6avedNrLvL_OQWvwcQtDrbl2Sc0NOHV-BYq_jjmiUlCl/s320/IMG_0884.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207737220918834818" />
What a glorious day in Amsterdam! When we arrived late Saturday morning, we worked our way through the busy airport and found the train. Only on our way I spied Starbucks and headed towards the familiar green sign. Thoughts of soy and chai lattes danced through my head. There was a long queue. I quickly came to my senses and we headed to our train. I'm sure I can do better than Starbucks in Amsterdam I thought to myself.
Once we got to Central Station and exited the train we were suppose to hop on the tram. It was so nice that we decided to walk. I am proud to say we've become true city people because we walk everywhere. My sister and Andy would be proud of us too.
People on bikes were everywhere and there are bike lanes everywhere too. Why would anyone drive? Where do the bikes go when no one is riding them? They're basically all over and I mean it. I think people lock them up anywhere they can find a space. It was amazing to me. After a short 20 minute walk we made it to Hotel Agora, our home for the night. We checked in and had to hoof it up 4 flights of very steep steps. The room was large and over looked a canal. We were quite pleased.
Dan and Teresa arrived shortly and we headed out. It was good to see them. We decided to grab some food to eat on the go. This could be tough as there is food all over in Amsterdam. We opted for some vlaams frites (fries) My on-line info said to try them and they were delish. They offer you almost any kind of sauce for dipping that one can think of too. We also got a falafel.
First ...a canal boat cruise which was nice and relaxing. Second stop... pedal boating for Kent and KJ while Teresa, Dan and I have a beer at a sidewalk cafe. Before beers we spot them pedaling down the canal and hop on for a short ride.
After spending lots of time on the water we head to T and D's hotel room for some wine and treats. KJ tries to nap. We decide to have dinner at an Argentinian Steakhouse. (My dad would be happy) These steakhouses are all over. D and T think Kent could use some red meat. It was fun and the food was alright. KJ is weary but on the way back to our hotel we walk through the largest plaza in the city and take some crazy photos. I take KJ to the hotel to bed while the others party on.....Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-37003779091291991712008-05-22T13:28:00.000-07:002008-05-23T03:35:39.409-07:00The Day After...Usually when visitors leave I feel blue. Teresa and Dan returned Wednesday night much later than they originally planned because the tour boats aren't on the summer schedule yet. They arrived around 11 pm which is about my bedtime and they left for Amsterdam well before we were up Thursday morning. We chatted about Bergen and their fjord adventure. They had a wonderful time. They invited us to join them in Amsterdam so we'll see them Saturday. Maybe that is why I'm not sad about them leaving.
Today was an interesting day... A couple weeks ago I received a call from Jeannette, the gal who owns our apartment. She asked me if I'd like to be a model for her friend Pasqual, who is a hairstylist. He was looking for someone with short hair to cut and put stripes on. (She meant highlights) She thought of me because duh, I have short hair and she knows I don't work. He needed someone in the morning. I jumped at the chance to have a free haircut. My hair is driving me crazy and I can't afford a 600 kroner ($125) cut!
Unfortunately Pasqual called shortly after Jeannette and said he'd already found someone. He did say that he'd still like to cut my hair since I was so nice to offer to model. We had a difficult time communicating since he spoke only Norske and Italian and a little Spanish. I speak ENGLISH and some Spanish. When I hung up I really didn't think I'd hear from him again.
Well, last week his Swedish wife called who spoke English much better and wanted me to come that day. I was busy and really thought this time he'd give up trying to give some American a free haircut.
Today was my lucky day! He called again and the timing was good. Kent came home a little early from work for my 5 pm appointment. His salon was only a 15 minute walk from our apartment. On the walk I thought about my hair, it's finally getting a little longer at least to me. Do I really want it cut short again? Will I be able to explain that I only want a trim?
I asked Pasqual what he thought before he started cutting away.
He showed me a photo and said, "like this; it's very modern and French."
He went on explaining how heavy my hair is and that it needs life in it. I agreed. I haven't had a haircut since December except for Jennifer's trim.
It was fun. We chatted mostly in Spanish but he spoke a little English. Weird, that I had my haircut by an Italian and we're communicating in Spanish in Oslo! He cut a lot of my hair and was really wild with the scissors. I was a little concerned about the end result. After he finished cutting he used wax and lots of spray. The end result, very cute but short again. I guess I'm a short hair gal.
I had to zip out of the salon to meet Kent and KJ for her soccer game. I tried to give Pasqual a tip but he refused and gave me a big hug.
We met up with the team at the clubhouse and carpooled to the opponent's field. It was by a lake we xcountry skied at last winter which was pretty far. Frigg played great and won 5-3. KJ made another goal. Playing with the Norwegian girls has been super for her game. She is really improving!
The team and the parents are very friendly. When KJ made her goal everyone cheered her on and Benedicta ran to Kayleigh and held her hands and did a little dance with her. It was so cute. Benedicta is a powerhouse for Frigg; she is tiny and mighty. One game she had a bloody nose and kept on playing.
When we got home KJ took a couple pictures of me sporting my new doo. I'm going to wait to show off my new hair as the wind at the game got the best of my new style.
Heia Frigg!Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-18739865286298376692008-05-21T07:31:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:53.063-08:00We Conquered The Rock<img style="float:right; Our destination: Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock).... Frommers says it's one of the most memorable hikes in this part of the world, through scenic fjord country with mountain landscapes as backdrops. The ultimate goal is the Pulpit rock with a vertical drop of 1,998 ft. over the stunningly blue Lysefjord.
Back to my story.... Once we reached the airport, got the rental car and T and D all checked into their hotel for the night, we reached the ferry. After a twenty minute ferry ride and a 30 minute drive, we reached the Preikestolen Lodge. Kent, KJ and I spent the night here. It was 4 pm when the receptionist at the lodge told us about the hail and snow on the rock and it would take us at least 4 hours to do the hike. We had a dinner reservation at 7:30. She agreed to have sausages and potato salad for us when we returned. Hmm, I thought to myself... what are we getting ourselves into? We came all the way to do the hike, so we all layered up and off we went.
As we started out most of the hikers were on the way down. There was such a variety of people; young, old, fit looking folks and not so fit looking ones. I was surprised at the footwear. How can you hike in canvas Converse?
I was also surprised at the weather; I wasn't cold? Throughout the hike the weather changed frequently. It did hail, snow and rain. None of the precipitation came down hard, so we didn't get very wet and none of us were cold. (Yes, I worry about warmth.)
I was concerned about how KJ would do. Her hiking has improved so much especially after last Sunday's hike but she had a big day yesterday (May 17, marching in the parade for 3 hours.) Her attitude about hiking is very positive. Kent and I are psyched about this since we want to do as much in the Nordmarka before we head home and to continue hiking in Oregon. We haven't done much and are loving it.
It was steep and rocky at the start. There were 3 hilly sections and the majority of the time we had a variety of rocks to climb. We saw waterfalls, flowers, and rainbows along the way. It was hard to keep from taking pictures.
Usually it is very windy but we lucked out. I guess hiking later in the day might have been an advantage. Kayleigh was doing sensational. We did take several short breaks along the way and had snacks. Teresa'a dark chocolate M&Ms came in handy. As we approached the rock it was very high. We could see mountains and the fjord... It was breathtaking. Once we set foot on the rock there were hardly any other people which was nice. We snapped more and more photos. It was absolutely stunning!
KJ repeatedly commented, "this is paper; it's a picture." Hmm, well it's the real thing sweetheart.
I thought being up so high was going to freak me out but I was wrong. I was fine; I guess it was too beautiful. Kent and Dan laid down on their tummies and looked over the edge. Kent even dangled his feet over the edge; what a daredevil.
On a side note: Teresa brought the travel section from The Oregonian. There is a weekly article about Oregonians traveling to distant places which includes a photo of your group holding the travel section. She thought our gang on the Pulpit Rock was a worthy destination. We have several good shots to send to our local paper. That will be fun.
I'm not going to go in detail about the descent although there was much to tell. KJ wounded her shin on a rock: but was fine. It's just as challenging going down as it is going up....
I was close to 9 pm and not dark (of course, it doesn't get dark until after 10 pm) when we got back to the lodge and had dinner. We were exhausted and very happy. We conquered the rock!Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-85535895452065331472008-05-20T06:42:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:54.118-08:00May 17; It was fun and festive as not many cafes were open.
We headed home to regroup for the afternoon. KJ immediately changed and wrapped herself up in her comforter. The weather wasn't what we hoped for for in mid May but what do you expect in Norway??? I planned to be outside all day whooping it up with the locals.
Later in the afternoon we headed down around Karl Johan's Gate where T and D mentioned there was some traditional dance taking place. We missed it but we were just in time for the russtoget. (I think that's right?) All the kids who are graduating from high school are in a huge parade celebrating their hard work. Actually they've already been celebrating the whole month with barbecues and parties. The kids who are in year 13 wear a particular pair of overalls throughout the whole month of May. Most of them wear red for a general area of study but a few wear blue for business and green for environmental studies.
KJ found out from her buddies that all the younger kids collect cards from the seniors. The cards are the size of a business card and are the same color as their overalls. They usually have a picture of the person along with a little bit of humor. The little kids run up to the older kids whenever they see them in the street or the park and ask them for a russe card. KJ had a few before the parade but was shy to ask many big kids. During the parade she collected 62 more cards! She had a blast running around the parade asking for cards and finding them on the ground because the big kids were throwing them in the air. It was nuts but great fun!
We wondered around the city; it was great just to be among all the Norwegians on their big day. Teresa, Dan and Kent ended up at the new opera house which according to them is pretty cool. It opened in April and is very modern. They walked up on the roof where they had a great view...
KJ was pooped so we made our way home on the trik. The trik was even entertaining as we saw so many people partying everywhere! I was happy the weather improved in the afternoon. It was still rather chilly and I actually wore my down jacket! Crazy but that's me.
Later that evening the Chinese boys Jenn and Reyes came over to join us for shrimp, polser and lomper, and festive cake that Teresa and KJ made. Kent made the polser on the disposable grill that I bought at the market. (The Norwegians are big fans of these one time use grills. We see them at the park on warm days.)
We sure had a great time celebrating Norway's birthday. My father-in law David says it is the best day to be in Oslo. I think he might be right.
Kayleigh's teacher, Guro told us that May 17 is Norway's birthday. Everyone dresses nicely for the celebration. Many wear the bunader which is the Norwegian traditional dress. Each costume is unique depending what region in Norway you are from. They are beautiful!
Kayleigh marched in a parade with all the children in our area. Each school has their own banner and all the kids march with their school. Some schools even have bands. Since we happen to live in central Oslo, Kayleigh's barnetoget (kid parade) marched up Karl Johan's Gate (the main street up to the palace) around the palace where the king and queen wave to all the children. This parade happens to be the largest in all of Norway. Too bad the weather was dreadful.(It even snowed for short time.)
FYI.... Guro told KJ she'd need to wear a dress. This was not good news for my little tomboy. She had no dress in Oslo; well we took care of that and she looked very pretty.
Kent decided he was going to dress up in honor of Norway's birthday too. He mentioned that he brought both his new suits along and hasn't had the opportunity to wear them. When he saw the lovely weather in the morning he quickly changed his mind. His daughter wasn't going to let him off the hook and he put his suit on later in the evening when we had our own celebration. He cleans up pretty well, don't you think?Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405609164463257132.post-74037847522600784732008-05-19T12:44:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:59:55.810-08:00Teresa and Dan Arrive!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdFk7_zFM7bigJg-IxmpqXyKswKKK6VgIZBFo6HvScS7N5zmSGMmcQvBhFEMcoYxHKRdpiHRBTsVFLeWGtmFYdAYSlCAa7NhSVwm0UiZh1gfxU7jUxg__rv7iGFTlfm1Q6A8OxN5HCdMO8/s320/IMG_0683.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202185130297092882" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdSXpyF-L3qVeYZFc7o7ZKijZ0end0Qa9H5ldj1e46CAAONxGTk7znNlJ5_D-uryfqzGQjVUF8waXXm_6_3c4cIS2UrFEds4sSvLGWMwVgMzsrJGtT448eWFb2uJoKwG5vuwnsBMNNBpZJ/s320/IMG_0805.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202184821059447554" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYXd6XJV7dwwJGb8-wGLMnQoJt453bEUIby-0d1aZm48eWqAXjCpZRhGwVObH74C-zpA448DQitJ-dKCgYAy5JCrqchMlykdKx0zhvCjnmjnYJuPH1LOqgQjgAEzC0cqO1vNWoRMi2XGe9/s320/IMG_0697.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202184425922456306" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8elRKizBkTq-xfm0p269dqpVewaykYiYG9BQEFT8_JWlyrTcsP4XrrH-STAO1croHAdOiJnJIiSPkOGnOwRvcT__vlSJIEuuBdbkWlCXYhFnuIDxSZ45LvnTpRBpgEqD65qZBFbo2cF14/s320/IMG_0811.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202183850396838626" />

I never thought this day would arrive. I think we were the only ones celebrating on May 11. I'm all about special days for people whether it's their birthday or whatever type of day makes them happy. Get the picture.... So when I became a mom I got another spacial day.
Sunday was an outstanding day! Kayleigh and Kent got me flowers and a latte in the morning, while I lounged in my pjs. KJ also made me homemade flowers with a little help from her dad. We had my favorite scones and watched Gilmore Girls.
Today I wanted to hike. Kristian gave us a suggestion last night and e-mailed a map to Kent. (very nice) We got dressed, made some sandwiches and headed to our neighborhood subway stop. We'd start our hike at Frognerseteren, the same stop where we xcountry skied from just a couple months ago. We are in the Nordmarka. Frommer (the author of my guide book) calls it Oslo's playground. The forest goes on forever and there are tons of trails for quality hiking. We decided having a mountain bike here would be too much fun!
First we hiked to Skjennung Stua.(stua means place) It was a long way and I was a little sketchy about KJ. She hasn't hiked much and was out late last night. She did it and with no complaining. We did stop along the way to eat our PB sandwiches. At the stua not only were we on the side of a mountain with a great scenic view but we were at a bakery! We split some lemon and chocolate bread and also had some quiche. After a short rest and nourishment we continued another 8.5 K to the Sogns Van. (van means lake) The trails were a bit of everything... rocky, downhill, uphill, some of the trails were covered with tree roots. We hiked over some little creeks where pieces of wood were placed for you to walk over. During the second part of the hike we passed several stuas where hikers can stop and rest and get food. We finally reached the lake. I wish we had time to check it out but we had to find the train stop and head home. We hiked for about 6 hours and at least 9 miles which is a new record for KJ.
When we got home she went straight to the tub and Kent made us dinner. We're all happy and exhausted!Tracy@iotabits.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07227192035971978693noreply@blogger.com0
